John Hirokawa is a law enforcement veteran with nearly 40 years of experience in the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. He has served across the department, beginning his career as a rank-and-file deputy in the county jail and as a patrol deputy before being promoted up through the ranks. Most recently, John served as Undersheriff, the second-ranking official in the department, and Chief of the Department of Correction, reporting to the Sheriff and the Board of Supervisors and overseeing the department’s 1800 sworn and civilian personnel and an annual budget of over $350 million.
John has built a reputation as a strong leader focused on community-oriented programs and is well liked and respected by his colleagues in the department as well as community leaders from throughout the county. After becoming Undersheriff, John was also selected by the Board of Supervisors to fill the position of Chief of Correction. Prior to these appointments, John served as one of two of the department’s Assistant Sheriffs, responsible for field enforcement and patrol, including transit, parks, investigations and special operations. John has experience in nearly every aspect of the department’s operations, including jails, courts, detectives, intelligence, vice, special operations and community relations.
Throughout his career, John has received countless awards and accolades for his service, including several commendations from the Board of Supervisors. He was honored as the “Officer of the Year” from several groups, including the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce in 2007 and the San Jose Optimist Club in 2000.
John lives in Saratoga with his wife, Anne, where they raised their two children. He has been an active community volunteer with dozens of local organizations and programs, including many that focus on helping at-risk youth stay out of trouble. He is a graduate of San Jose State University and the FBI National Academy.
